HISTORY OF THE CENTER
The Centre for Counselling and Human Development in Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti was established in February, 2014 under the Vice Chancellorship of Professor Patrick Oladapo Aina. The establishment was in response to the directive from the National University Commission that all Tertiary Institutions should set up a Centre for Counselling and Human Development.
The University Centre for Counselling and Human Development is committed to serving students on their various needs that may require professional counseling support. The Centre equally promotes University Community Welfare by extending support services to staff and parents of Ekiti State University and her environs. It is of worthy note that the Centre had been providing solutions to the challenges confronting the clients which could hamper their functionality and their education.
The Centre provides services covering but not limited to the followings:
(a). Educational/Academic Counselling
The Centre provides services on:
- Registration procedures, choice of courses and requirements for graduation
- Effective study habits, use of library and acquisition of examination skills
- Coping with academic challenges such as spillover, transfer, change of course and withdrawal cases
- Creating awareness of available opportunities such as postgraduate programmes and scholarship awards within and outside the University.
(b). Career Guidance/Counselling
The Centre offers the following services:
- Preparing students for labour market or self employment
- Providing career guidance on job opportunities providing help on challenges of students on various courses being offered by the students
- Conducting researches into the various aspects of career guidance and counselling
- Creating, promoting and developing training activities that can enhance and improve the employability of students and graduates
- Assisting companies and commercial enterprises in organizing career talks for prospective graduates in order to acquaint them with job requirements and career prospects.
(c) Personal-Social Counselling
The Centre provides services on:
- Coping with academic demands and life in and after school
- Managing phobia (excessive fear), stress, depression and cynicism (distrustful attitude)
- Building social skills (assertiveness, decision-making skills, modeling, mentoring etc)
- Managing cases of addiction to alcohol and other hard substances.
- Overcoming undesirable personal habits (e.g. stammering, shyness, extravagant behavior, Overeating etc)
- Managing emotional difficulties (e.g. temper tantrums)
- Assisting students to adjust to the University environment
- Fostering discipline and responsible behaviors
- Coping with loneliness and feeling of inadequacy
- Managing interpersonal matters (making friend, conflicts between or among roommates, friends etc)
- Handling religious and spiritual matters
- Organizing training on assertiveness and decision making skills
- Managing other personal and social concerns that interfere with individual’s normal functioning.
(d). Marriage and Family Counselling
The Centre offers services on:
- Marriage and family matters
- Sexual matters (e.g. harassment, rape, incestuous relationship, variances)
- Choice of partners and preparation for marital life
- Handling marital challenges
- Handling interpersonal conflicts in courtship and family affairs.
(e). Financial Counselling
The Centre offers financial counselling service in the following areas;
- Management of available funds
- Guidance on ways of sourcing financial income
- Providing financial support to indigent (poor) students
- Providing links for scholarship, and
- Providing linkage for part-time job (personnel Counselling).
(f). Health Counselling
The Centre offers services on:
- Personal hygiene
- Prevention and control of diseases
- Referral to clinic or hospital for medical assistance.
(g). Religious Counselling
During Counselling, clients are attended to with pragmatically, systematically with creative psychosocial therapies. Cases beyond the Counselling Centre are referred to appropriate units, organizations and departments of the University or other relevant agencies so as to bring about desirable solution and comprehensive well being.
STAFF:
The Centre comprises of a Director, Deputy Director, Counsellor, Administrative Officers, Busary and Audit staffs.
The centre is being headed by a director. The following are the directors that have headed the centre since her inception in 2014.
